Straight Shooter - With John Phillips Intro

[Spoken-Word Intro - John Phillips]
Michelle and myself and Marshall Brickman - who's now, right now he's head writer on The Tonight Show, comedy writer, very funny guy - were a trio singing together

And Marshall wanted to write a movie script, and Denny had just left a group called the Halifax Three. He was in New York, and I had met him a couple years before on tour

And so he called me and said, "here, you need a tenor."

And he came over and he sang. He sang and it worked out fine

And about three or four weeks later, we met Cass
And Cass and I are from the same hometown in Virginia, Alexandria, Virginia

But we didn't know each other because I'm maybe about five years older than Cass and by the time she got to school, I'd left

Cass followed us around for months, maybe six or seven months, trying to join the group. We kept saying no

She did jobs as a waitress whenever we were working, just to be around. She knew she was going to get in the group, and we knew she was going to get in the group also

Just a good game to play for a while. She had to keep following us, and she finally followed us down to the Virgin Islands. We were camping out. You can imagine Cass camping out

[Verse 1]
Don't get me mad
Don't tell no lie
Don't make me sad
Don't pass me by

[Chorus]
Baby, are you holding
Holding anything but me?
'Cause I'm a real straight shooter
If you know what I mean

[Verse 2]
You can bring me love
You can hang around
You can bring me up
Don't you bring me down

[Chorus]
Baby, are you holding
Holding anything but me?
'Cause I'm a real straight shooter
If you know what I mean

[Bridge]
I've been searching all night
Just to find what I'm looking for
Baby, baby, treat me right
Or I won't come 'round your door
No more

[Verse 3]
You can bring me love
You can hang around
You can bring me up
Don't you bring me down

[Chorus]
Baby, are you holding
Holding anything but me?
'Cause I'm a real straight shooter
If you know what I mean

[Bridge]
I've been searching all night
Just to find what I'm looking for
(Looking for, looking for)
Baby, baby, treat me right
Or I won't come 'round your door
No more

[Verse 4]
Don't get me mad
Don't tell no lie
Don't get me sad
Just get me high

[Chorus]
Baby, what you're holding
Half of that belongs to me
'Cause I'm a real straight shooter
(Baby, don't you get me mad)
I'm a real straight shooter
(I've been searching all night long)
I'm a real straight shooter
Baby, if you know what I mean

[Outro]
If you know what I mean, ooh
