The Soundtrack

James Morgan Davies, Pierre Scarland, Jérémy BERNARD

Is music the most powerful way in which we express our personalities
Does our musical taste say more about who we really are
than the clothes we wear or the friends we choose
How much can you really learn about someone based on their favorite music
We can’t deny that music speaks to us
We connect with music
We relate to it’s melodies, harmonies and lyrics
A powerful tune can evoke incredible emotions within us
The psychological effect of music on the human brain has been studied exstensively
But what does your musical taste say about you

Back when I pressed play
and heard KRS on that cassette tape
It made my heart jump out of my chest plate
It made me start rhyming the next day
checking for the sick cats like an X-ray
Ay... I was raised on Wu
I had that Raekwon tape on loop
Way on route to make this my day job too
When I hear kids today I’m like Déjà Vu
Rap is the soundtrack to our lives
We wouldn’t be Jack without Nas
We’d battle rap with proud guys
Chat shit about my mama
I’ma Catch you outside

Just a swarm of wild kids
We’d copy mobb deep in army outfits
Looking for the smartest outlets
When I grow up I’ll be a hustler like the doggystyle skit
Slick Rick taught us all about drip
Flamboyant loud shit, with large medallions
We had no fathers, we’d resort to violence
We were taught bravado from our Onyx albums

Hip-hop, to the core
I’d bop to The score
Rap didn’t knock at the door
Way before this was a popular sport
We had to catch up, we were not from New York
But we made this our own
invited the culture into our home
I know that my skin’s got a similar tone
I am Way more then an Eminem clone
This thing been in my bones
it’s the reason I get bread
Too short was a piece of my sex Ed
Bumping Meth instead of being a meth head
Play my playlist when I sleep on my Deathbed

This is the soundtrack
My life wouldn’t mean nothing without rap
This is the theme music
Me and my playlist done been through it

I remember when I was like 9, the first CD that I copped
Was jungle all bout basslines
In my room like a shrine it was shining
Original Nutter by Shy it's was firing high
Lost in the music, basement bedroom
Always had the tunes on, shit was like a ballroom
Tape deck, CD deck and AMP, speakers were shaking the floor
Poor mum she was breaking the porcelain
Locked-on 182s I start buying
I was into all the garage it was hyping
I was into the radio, checking the MC flow
All of the styles of the rhyming
I was bullied in the school but The Score really helped me through to start writing
Put my feelings on the page, never gave in to an outrage, listening Rage and then shouting
"Don't do what they told ya"
Was down with the culture, I stood for myself and I bunned all the vultures
Held my composure the music that I felt was a belter
while listening to Helter Skelter tape packs on a daily
Skiba and Shabba and Navi, more fire crew with the energy
To better myself and get ahead as an MC
But was never really down with the grime scene
But then I heard Dizzee on a track
Man was like "yo bruv what the fuck is that"
Its goes "I LUV U" then I lost my crap
It was a banger for the streets like Akala's back
I loved hip hop, garage and them Jungle acts
It's was the best of the UK, straight up facts
I live life one step at a time, it's all mine
And I live it like a real sound track

This is the soundtrack
My life wouldn’t mean nothing without rap
This is the theme music
Me and my playlist done been through it
