What Care I

MAYERL, BILLY

You've heard about the folk I expect
Who speak with indignation
Of what they calls the gross neglect
Of higher education

I've heard about it once or twice
But I'm not one who heeds it
Now education may be nice
But them who really needs it

So what care I for learning
It's no good to me
If I knew latin or even greek
I'd still be getting a pound a week

If I could do arithmetic
Or write a first class letter
I'd still be tending pigs all day
And pigs would like me better

There be a maid I'm courting now
She ain't got much book learning
But you should see her milk a cow
Or keep the cream a-churning

She knows the way a man to please
And I and I ain't looking
So what's the good of a degree
If you can't do the cooking

So what care we for learning
It's no good to us
For we be two of a kind we be
I'm made for her and she's made for me

And though she ain't a clever sort
I set no less about her
For she don't mind what she don't know
As long as she knows I love her
