Northern Lights

Peter Blegvad

I've never been north of Schenectady
But I pray one day I get to see
The Northern Lights
I got rows of books about 'em on my shelf
But I must see for myself
With my own eyes
I want to see them shine
Like heaven sending me a sign
I want to be dazzled blind
By the Northern Lights

With her hand held to her face she weeps
Her hands seem held in place
By hidden wires
She sits there, paralysed
And I can't analyse
What the poor girl desires
Until she says
"I want to see them shine
Like heaven sending me a sign."
Well, she doesn't have to tell me
Here feeling are the same as mine
For the Northern Lights

We travel north at night to see them shining
In our dreams
While scientists are thinking that the universe
Is shrinking as it cools
And who or what we are we'll never know

It took thirteen days by stolen car to get this far
Don't say you're doubtful now
People used to see the Lights from here
On summer nights when skies were clear of cloud
And we're gonna see them shine
It'll be like heaven sending us a sign
We're gonna be dazzled blind
By the Northern Lights
