Take No Prisoners - Intro

Janis Ian

[Spoken]
I like closing with the next song because
It says a lot of how I feel being a writer
And um, as cliched as this is, I've wanted to do what I'm doing tonight
Since I was two and a half years old
So it's really amazing to me that I still get to do it and, uh, be up here and
People actually come who aren't even my relative or anything
It's an amazing thing to be a songwriter
You know, y-you, you pray to write songs
Like "Seventeen" or "Stars" or "Jesse" that, that touch people's heart
And you hope to make something of a change in people's lives
And also earn a living while you're doing it, and I've been really lucky
I think it's just the best, just the best job in the world
'Cause you know, artists, when we're doing our job
We get to take people's dreams and make something visible out of them
And then when people forget that they have dreams
And everything look really dark and horrible
We get to remind you that they exist
And that's a serious privilege for us, ya know
I feel like I stand on a lotta people's bones every time I get up on stage
Bones of people like Billie Holiday
Who do that for me, and continue to do it for me
And um, you know it is a terrible cliché, but it really is a real privilege
To be able to do it night after night, so thank you for that
And um, I do, I do
