The Butterfly In The Hornet's Nest (feat. Joey Sundance)

Charlie Howell

It came to life amidst a hornet's nest
Shimmering splendid rose its rainbow crest
A stark contrast to the warning signs
That defined the hornet's savage lines
All around a terrible sound
A noisy din
A formless drone
Alas, it did not feel at home
More, it felt alone
The constant buzz an unspeakable pressure to conform
To the hornet's norm
To be like them when
A butterfly must be its own
Must stand alone
Defiant to the awful sound
It spread its wings with care
So as not to scare
The predators lurking everywhere
Yet no matter how carefully it moved
The hive, as one mind, felt the shift
And began to drift towards the foreign form
That challenge the established norm
Scared without knowing why
Ready to kill
Or else to die
Programmed to defend a lie
A thousand stingers honing in
Its mere presence the fatal sin
Radiant wings now fully grown
It felt a strength it had not known
To stand alone and defy it all
It knew right there and then
That a single beat might cause a ripple
So strong that it could cripple
Any long held way to be
Any mistaken identity
So it beat its wings
And rose to fly
The hornets shaken
Their power taken
By a single creature that had no fear
Could do naught but stand and leer
A butterfly with rainbow crest
Born into a hornet's nest
Beat its wings and changed the world
So too can you and I
If only we dare to fly
