Night on North Pottenger

Braden Hobbs

It was early in the morning when the officers broke into the yard
They yelled IDs and Outside these fellas they were acting pretty hard
There was no mistake they found the place the little house to blame for all the noise complaints
They lined us up and had the chat then the big man asked who owns this place

I froze like a deer in the headlights
I was afraid at the time
I was nineteen years old and I was pretty far gone
It was a routine Friday night
There was no point to try and deny it
The circumstances spoke for themselves
I laced my shoes and I tightened my belt

The four of us stepped forward preparing to honor our charge
I told him we were renters we didn't own a damn thing but our cars
He studied my license and shot a gaze at the bottle in my hand
He said you're playing with fire boy you're not even old enough to be dubbed a man

Then I caught a strange look in his eye
And he cracked an empathetical smile
He said I too threw 'em down back in my day son
But those days have been gone for a while
I'm glad to see the torch is still burning
But you're glowing red from the heat
Go inside and try to get some sleep
Go inside and try to get some sleep

We counted inventory they hadn't taken any liquor or weed
That's gold to some college kids the only entertainment we'd need
Can't you see us on the cover of jailbirds now criminals with criminal records
We found salvation between the fingers of a few fine strangers
There was light in a kind heart that hadn't yet been torn apart by the ways of this place
Damn the darkness keep it at bay
May God damn the darkness and keep it at bay
