Autumn Childhood
Childhood came to me again
The dust and cobwebs left a pain
That ploughed the furrows of the dead
And burning wood smoke filled my head
And autumn gold burned out my eyes
And left me with no alibis
Naked as the stars I was
Lonely as the sky and lost
The fading light is retreating still
It's always dead and always will
And all my life is contained in this
The key to each and every wish
Cried, cried, yes, I cried
Oh, salt tears, they rolled down and down and down till I died
Died, died, yes, I died
Oh, so low did they bury me, I went down and down till I cried
Autumn spread her wings to fold me
Autumn spread her wings to hold me
And take me back
Everyone'd be there
Their joy would fill the air
Everyone'd be there
I could stay out till twelve, run around, enjoy myself
I'd run off quick, the smoke was thick, I was there
I laughed the night away in the colour of the smoke and flame
The crackling wood, the noise was good, I was there
And everybody was there
Their laughter filled the air
Everybody was there
And everybody was there
Their laughter filled the air
Everybody was there
And autumn returned
Autumn returned, oh
Childhood came to me again
The dust and cobwebs left a pain
That ploughed the furrows of the dead
And burning wood smoke filled my head
Cried, cried, yes, I cried
Oh salt tears, they rolled down and down and down till I died
Died, died, yes, I died
Oh, so low did they bury me, I went down and down till I cried
Autumn spread her wings to fold me
Autumn spread her wings to hold me
