Stonewalls

Derek Johnson

Oh, them old stone walls, they're never gonna fall
Though the field's filled with leaves when the trees grew tall
But those rings over time, are broken so unwind
Deep in the woods you should still find
Them old stonewalls
Around our family table, we told American fables
Of Johnny Appleseed, and his fruit-bearing trees
How he always fed the poor, and I ain't that to the core
A child of Central Mass, how the seasons do pass
The hills turn bare, with no more green to wear
And the grass turns white, during cold winter nights
What I can say, is I'll look back on autumn days
Hearing the chickadee call, all, throughout the fall
I want a nest in stonewalls
Well how the cold, took a hold
of my rattling bones
So I went far, leaving my memoir
Carved on an thin Gravestone
But them old stonewalls, they're never gonna fall
Though the field's filled with leaves, when the trees grew tall
And those rings over time are unbroken so unwind
Deep in the woods, you should, still find
The hills turn bare, with no more green to wear
And the grass turns white, during cold winter nights
But what I can say, is I'll look back on autumn days
Hearing the chickadee call, all, throughout the fall
I want a nest in stonewalls
I want a nest in stonewalls
I want a nest in stonewalls
