Angel on the Road
I watched snowflakes melt on leather
cold & young ago
the road goes on forever
the jukebox told me so
barmaid woman friendly
men handsome & manly
almost I forget me
and the lonely where I’m going
I wish I was someone else
someone I don’t even know
I wish I was somewhere else
making angels in the snow
small town stars are bright
hi-beams bright
my sad old car has died
I’ll have to hitch a ride
He downshifts his beautiful rig
the door steams open & I climb in
I wish I was someone else . . .
“I’m Duane, nice to meet you.’
‘Nice to meet me too’, I say
He asks me where I’m going
I point to the sky
“Lead the way angel”,
Duane says as the radio sings
they scraped me off that two lane
my arms spread wide as wings
I wish I was someone else
someone I don’t even know
I wish I was somewhere else
making angels in the snow
